Bajrang Punia Suspended for Four Years by NADA Over Doping Violation

After he declined to provide a doping sample during the national team selection trials on March 10, 2024, Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia, a bronze medallist in the Tokyo Olympics, has been suspended four years by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). Following an earlier temporary ban imposed on him in April, this suspension is confirmed following a series of hearings by NADA's Anti-Disciplinary Doping Panel (ADDP).
Officially, the suspension started on April 23, 2024, the same day the temporary suspension was issued. The temporary suspension was lifted, nevertheless, over a brief period spanning May 31 and June 21, 2024. There will not be counting of this period towards the four-year suspension. Bajrang will not be able to participate in any wrestling tournaments or assume any international coaching positions during the ban.
Among the best wrestlers in India, Bajrang has publicly challenged the accusations. He thinks NADA mistreated him, especially with relation to the December 2023 testing kits he claims were expired. Bajrang has maintained that he was unsure about the authenticity of the operation thus he sought NADA for explanation rather than refusing to offer a sample. He has also speculated that his demonstrations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former Wrestling Federation of India president, might have some bearing on the doping claims. Bajrang thinks the allegations could be payback for his participation in the demonstrations.
NADA has maintained, meanwhile, that Bajrang purposefully neglected to perform his obligations as an athlete under the Anti-Doping Rules and deliberately declined to offer a doping sample. NADA claims that their staff followed all the right protocols; Bajrang's non-compliance with the testing process was deliberate, not a result of a misinterpretation or error.
Reviewing the matter, the panel determined Bajrang guilty under Article 10.3.1 of the Anti-drug Rules, which addresses the denial to submit to drug testing. His four-year ban was hence maintained. For Bajrang, one of the most eminent players in Indian wrestling, this choice is a major turnoff.
For Bajrang, especially considering his successes on the international scene—including his historic victory at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—this is a setback. Major milestones in his career, the suspension means he will miss big forthcoming tournaments such the World Wrestling Championships and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Notwithstanding the decision, Bajrang's fans defend him; many of them have questions about the equity of the accusations. The matter has generated discussion on the openness and responsibility of anti-doping policies in Indian sports. Bajrang's career pauses as it stands, hence the wrestling community will be attentively observing to see how things change.
This case reminds us of the need of rigorous adherence to anti-doping rules in sports, but it also emphasises the continuous conflicts in Indian wrestling with Bajrang at the centre of a storm with several levels. The road forward for the Olympic medallist seems unknown, and it is still to be seen how this controversy will finally affect his career in the sport.
